Mountain Bay Trail Permanently closed to ATV's

The Mountain Bay Trail that crosses Shawano County will no longer allow ATV usage. It was recently annouced by the WI DNR dept. that they must shut down the Mountain Bay Trail to ATV's. When the Trail was developed, a "T" Grant was used. A description of a "T" Grant is basically  a walking , hiking, and biking trail. However there was a clause added to allow snowmobile use in the winter.No one for saw the future of atving when applying for Grant money to develop this old Rail Road bed. Now we are faced with the bitter reality that it will always remain this way.  If Shawano County were to ingnore the DNR and continue to allow ATV's they would be in violation of a Federal Grant and be subject to pay all monies used back. So Shawano County has decided to comply with the request and close the trail to ATV's.

We must be wise when it comes to applying for Grant money to develop our new trails. We must try and concider all possible needs, and be careful not to exclude any future use. Because to change the past sometimes is impossible.
