Happy Trails ATV Club is a very busy organization; in 2008 the club hosted the
Happy Tails Spring Fling on May 10th. The event consisted of ATV Pulls and
Radar Runs. Trophies were awarded to first second and third place. Members
also ran a food and beverage stand.
4th of July was the start of all area parades our club participates in 6 parades a
year. The 4th of July parades are a good time for us to sell our raffle tickets. Th
e raffle we hold each year is our big fund raiser. The winners are drawn at the
Gresham Badlands Run.
In July the club started to prepare the trails for the third annual Gresham Badlands Run.The Gresham Badlands Run was held August 16th and 17th.
After the trails were marked and ready members began to set up the fest
grounds. Tents were raised, the track for the pulls was erected, and the Radar
Run track was also constructed. This year we added a new event and Obstacle
course. So every one pitched in and helped construct the new track and truck
in the water for the mud hole. This proved to be a very entertaining event to
watch.
Each year we get visitors from all over the state of Wisconsin to spend the
weekend with us and enjoy the beautiful trails in the Gresham area. These trails
are only open one weekend a year. This brings me to another very busy activity
our club is working on. We have been working with the private landowners on
this trail system to convert the temporary trail into a permanent system. This trail
system would be open Memorial Day weekend thru Labor Day weekend. So
far we have been very successful with landowner negotiations. If all goes well
our goal is to have this open to the public in 2010.
Every fall since the start of
the Gresham Badlands Run we have hosted the Landowners Appreciation
Dinner. At this banquet we present a slide show entitled ” A Year with Happy
Trails ATV Club” this gives them a chance to see what our club is all about. We
also get a chance to thank the landowners personally and talk with them about
there concerns if they have any. This has proved very helpful in the negotiations
with them. This past year was exceptionally educational for the landowners. We
had three guest speakers, Randy Harden representing WATVA, Gary Hanson
representing the DNR, and Melinda Barlow and Tim Reed representing
Shawano County Planning and Development. These guests were also available
to answer questions concerning the opening of the trail system for three months
a year to the public.
Our club is also a very charitable organization each winter members do bell
ringing for the Salvation Army. This year we also donated a $250.00 check to
our local Food Pantry at Thanksgiving time. And at our Christmas party we hold
a toy and food drive to donate to the needy in our area.
Through out the year our club members are very active in the trail Ambassador
Program, wracking up the miles on trails across the state of Wisconsin. We also
conduct at least three DNR Safety certification classes for the area youth.
We also get together each June for a weekend of trail riding a big campfire,
great food and lots of stories about our adventures while atving. This weekend is
held at a different resort each year. Last year we had 50 members attend the
weekend get away which was held at Lake Hilbert Campground on the Dunbar
trails. Every one had a great time the staff at Lake Hilbert Campground could
not have been more welcoming to all of our members.
As you can see the Shawano County Happy Trails ATV Club is a large group
of very wonderful people, with a common love of the sport of ATVing. I am
sure you will see great accomplishments’ form this group in the future.
